FGS Tampa Meeting - Moved to Saturday, 8 November 2008
The Florida Genealogical Society (Tampa) meeting for November has been moved up to Saturday, 8 November 2008. The reason for the change in date is that the Florida State Genealogical Society's 37th Annual Conference will be held the following weekend, 14-15 November 2008, and a number of our members will be participating at that event.
Our FGS (Tampa) meeting on 8 November will be held, as usual, in the Auditorium of the John F. Germany Public Library at 900 S. Ashley Boulevard in downtown Tampa. The Poe Parking Garage is adjacent to the library and charges a parking fee.
The November program is the popular annual society "show and tell" presentation. If you have an interesting family item that showcases your family, provides evidence of some event or occupation, proves a specific fact, OR is of other interest that you would like to share with our society members, please bring it along. Remember that your "show and tell" item(s) may inspire other members who have never considered searching for similar items and evidence to follow your lead!
No advance pre-registration is necessary. We welcome every item that you want to bring!

If you would like to learn how to produce an outstanding family newsletter, this presentation will help you. Pattie Schultz starts this presentation by explaining how you gather the information for your newsletter. She offers advice on planning and budgeting as well as the production of a family newsletter. Get suggestions on how to organize your material and decide if your newsletter will be distributed by email or snail mail.
Pam Tremé shows how to locate and use pre-formatted templates that make pulling all of the elements together into a newsletter a snap! Pamela Tremé is a Tampa-area hobby genealogist who also happens to work in the software industry. She uses her knowledge of software to present her own family research in various formats and forms.

FGS Tampa Meeting for 18 October 2007
The Florida Genealogical Society is pleased to announce its program for Saturday, 18 October 2007. Debbe Hagner will be presenting an excellent program at the meeting about German genealogical research. Florida State Genealogical Society Conference
The Florida State Genealogical Society's 32nd annual Conference will be held at the beautiful Sheraton Orlando North in Maitland, Florida, on Friday and Saturday, November 14 & 15, 2008. The featured speaker is Jana Sloan Broglin, CG, a member of the board of the Federation of Genealogical Societies, author, speaker, and professional genealogical researcher. She will present four excellent lectures.

Call to Action: Preserving Historic Records Bill
The Preserving the American Historical Record (PAHR) is a bill to provide federal formula grants to every state for projects that preserve historical records and make them more accessible. House Resolution (H.R.) 6056 has a stated purpose “To authorize the Archivist of the United States to make grants to States for the preservation and dissemination of historical records” and was introduced by Reps. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY-22) and Chris Cannon (R-UT) and referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on May 14.
This bill, if passed, can conceivably result in grants to states to fund records preservation and access initiatives, all of which may benefit genealogists and historians.
The time has come to rally support for this important legislation that will provide resources for archival repositories and cultural heritage institutions that house primary resources genealogists and other historical researchers use. We hope that you will consider preparing a letter to send to your congressman. Please visit the Preserving the American Historical Record (PAHR) website to learn more. There also is a draft letter there which you can download to your computer in RTF (Rich Text Format, readable by every word processor), and customize to your specific thoughts and concerns. You can send it to your U.S. Senator and Representative. FGS' 50th Anniversary and Fall Seminar
We have had a WONDERFUL 50th anniversary celebration for the Florida Genealogical Society (Tampa) this past weekend! Our gala 50th anniversary dinner on 12 September was limited to the first 50 registrants, and we had an almost full complement at the lovely Valencia Garden Restaurant in Tampa. The food was absolutely top-notch, and we were greatly entertained by Paula Stuart-Warren's talk about "Murphy's Law and Genealogy Research Trips."
We then presented our annual Fall Seminar on Saturday, 13 September, in the technologically state-of the-art Student Services Building Auditorium at Hillsborough Community College Campus on Dale Mabry Boulevard (across from Raymond James Stadium where the Tampa Buccaneers play and the site of the next Super Bowl on 2 February 2009). Almost 100 attendees enjoyed four excellent talks by the stellar Paula Stuart-Warren: 20th and 21st Century Genealogical Research; Railroad Records and Railroad History: Methods for Tracking; Organizing Your Genealogical Materials: Methods to Keep it Current; and Untrod Ground: Sources You May Not Have Encountered.
A great group of vendors and other genealogical societies were present in the exhibit hall, as well as a vast collection of free books, historic genealogical magazines, and more. FGS presented a commemorative display of its first fifty years, including special proclamations from Florida Governor Charlie Crist, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, and Generations Network CEO Tim Sullivan. These framed commemorative documents will be on permanent display in the Ceta Rodgers Armitage Room adjacent to the History and Genealogy Department of the John F. Germany Public Library in downtown Tampa.
In addition, FGS had more than $1,100.00 in door prizes of all types from Ancestry.com (The Generations Network), RootsMagic, Everton's, Family Tree Magazine, Family Roots Publications, the Florida Genealogical Society, the Estate of Melvin O. Brown, George G. Morgan, GenerationMaps.com, the Pasco Genealogical Society, and local society member Ann King! It was a rich treasure trove for our attendees!
Volunteers pins were awarded to a number of society members in recognition of their great service to the society. The annual Volunteer of the Year Award was bestowed upon Shirley Evans Besch. Shirley provides the society's "Ask a Genealogist" service at the John F. Germany Library in downtown Tampa on the first Saturday morning of each month. She has served on the FGS Board for the last year, providing inteligence, excellent ideas and suggestion for membership, great humor, and wonderful camaraderie. She produced (with husband Rick Besch) this year's elegant FGS Member Directory, and she unselfishly volunteers her time and energy to help other researchers and to promote the success of the society. Shirley is the embodiment of charm, grace, and volunteer spirit!

The 2008 FGS Fall Seminar with Paula Stuart-Warren
The Florida Genealogical Society is very pleased to announce its annual Fall Seminar, which will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at the Dale Mabry campus of Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, FL, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PMOur very special speaker is Paula Stuart-Warren, CGSM, an internationally recognized genealogical expert, author, lecturer, and professional researcher who works full-time in the field of genealogy.
Paula is a graduate of the National Institute of Genealogical Research held at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). She is certified by the Board for Certification of Genealogists and is a firm believer in continuing education in genealogy. She is comfortable with her audiences and enjoys discussing genealogy with participants. Her seminar presentations have taken her to most states in the U.S. and to Canada. Since 1997 she has been a Course Coordinator for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy's American Genealogy Records and Resources intermediate course.
She is a columnist for Ancestry Weekly Journal and has written articles for many genealogical publications including NewEnglandAncestors.org, FGS Forum, the NGS NewsMagazine, and Ancestry Magazine. She co-authored the book, Your Guide to the Family History Library. Paula has been a national officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), a board member of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, and an active volunteer for the Federation of Genealogical Societies.
Her ancestors represent eight different countries. These ancestors, descendants, and the cousins resided in many Midwestern and Western states and in several Canadian provinces. She has researched her children’s paternal southern ancestors. Her other specialties include the U.S. National Archives, major repositories, American Indians, railroads, and the WPA.

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay will meet at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 14th, at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater, Fla. for a presentation by Bill Israel on "Historic Synagogues of Budapest and Bucharest." Bill, and his wife, Sally, traveled in Hungary, Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania in April of this year, where they made it a point to seek out and visit historical synagogues. Bill will present his photo and video travel journal of the synagogues they visited including an in-depth tour of The Great Synagogue of Budapest, also known as the Dohany Street Synagogue, and its museum. This synagogue is the largest in Europe, and either the largest or second largest in the world. Its square footage is less than that of Temple Emmanuel in New York, but the Great Synagogue of Budapest seats 3,000, whereas Temple Emmanuel seats only 2,500. The Great Synagogue dates from the 1850's, and today is one of the most beautiful buildings and sought after tourist attractions of Budapest, as well as the main synagogue of the local Jewish community. A photo record of other historical synagogues of Budapest and Bucharest – most dating from the mid-1800s will also be shown. Several of these synagogues are now museums or are used to house businesses, but they retain their beauty. Bill's photos and videos of them will let you visit them too.

FGS Program for August 16th
FGS is pleased to have Alvie Davidson, CG, as our speaker for our meeting on Saturday, August 16th, at the John F. Germany Library in downtown Tampa. His program is titled "A Private Investigator's View of Genealogy." The session will covers how genealogy and a private investigator's work are so very dove-tailed. Genealogy is a great tool to help a private investigator in accomplishing his in-depth study of research problems. Case studies will be presented to illustrate the point.Mr. Davidson is a licensed private investigator and has been in that line of work for many years. He also is a Certified GenealogistSM and a professional genealogical researcher and lecturer.
We hope you will join us for this great presentation on August 16th. The meeting begins at 10:30 AM in the Auditorium of the library at 900 N. Ashley Drive in Tampa.

I am heading up a 2-week project called the Jewish Discovery Center, which is a children's-museum project that focuses on Jewish culture and tradition. We have five exhibit areas (Moses & Miriam's Treasures in the Desert, Adam & Eve's Garden, Joseph's Diverse Dreamcoat, Mr. Abraham's Neighborhood, and Noah's Ark Theater) as well as a whole slew of cool programs happening (music and movement, yoga for kids, sing-alongs, art workshops, storytimes, and more).
This is an awesome opportunity for families to end the summer with! And a two-week pass is only $10 in advance, or $14 at the door, for the *entire household*!

Pinellas Genealogical Society - 19 July 2008
The Pinellas Genealogy Society will present a program on 19 July 2008 entitled "Census Analysis."
This program will describe how to make the most of the pre-1850 census records. As heads of household are the only listed persons in the Census, people often underestimate the information they can glean from early census records. Debra Sandstrom Fleming will use a case study of a Southern Methodist Minister born 1771 and passing in 1842 to describe the methodology behind Census analysis. The 2008 FGS Fall Seminar with Paula Stuart-Warren
The Florida Genealogical Society is very pleased to announce its annual Fall Seminar, which will be held on Saturday, September 13, 2008, at the Dale Mabry campus of Hillsborough Community College in Tampa, FL, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PMOur very special speaker is Paula Stuart-Warren, CGSM, an internationally recognized genealogical expert, author, lecturer, and professional researcher who works full-time in the field of genealogy.
Paula is a graduate of the National Institute of Genealogical Research held at the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). She is certified by the Board for Certification of Genealogists and is a firm believer in continuing education in genealogy. She is comfortable with her audiences and enjoys discussing genealogy with participants. Her seminar presentations have taken her to most states in the U.S. and to Canada. Since 1997 she has been a Course Coordinator for the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy's American Genealogy Records and Resources intermediate course.
She is a columnist for Ancestry Weekly Journal and has written articles for many genealogical publications including NewEnglandAncestors.org, FGS Forum, the NGS NewsMagazine, and Ancestry Magazine. She co-authored the book, Your Guide to the Family History Library. Paula has been a national officer of the Association of Professional Genealogists (APG), a board member of the Minnesota Genealogical Society, and an active volunteer for the Federation of Genealogical Societies.
Her ancestors represent eight different countries. These ancestors, descendants, and the cousins resided in many Midwestern and Western states and in several Canadian provinces. She has researched her children’s paternal southern ancestors. Her other specialties include the U.S. National Archives, major repositories, American Indians, railroads, and the WPA.
Paula will present four lecture topics at this year's conference:- 20th and 21st Century Research

- Organizing Your Genealogical Materials: Methods to Keep it Current
- Untrod Ground: Sources You May Not Have Encountered
