FGS Program for 19 January 2007

The Florida Genealogical Society (Tampa) kicks off its 50th Anniversary Year with a great presentation by Adrienne Condon. Our first membership meeting and presentation of the year begins with a great presentation about "Indentured Servitude." Many of our ancestors could only afford to come to North America by contracting themselves out for a period of years to serve their monarch or others. Learn the extent of those indentures, their duration, what they entailed, and where to search for records.

The FGS (Tampa) meeting will be held on Saturday, 13 January from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 Noon in the Genealogy Department on the 2nd Floor West of the John F. Germany Public Library at 900 North Ashley Drive in downtown Tampa. (There is a conflict that prevents us from meeting in the Auditorium as usual.) Attendance is free.

Don't forget that your membership dues are due too! Individual dues are $20.00 and family/household dues are $25.00. We have a great 50th Anniversary Year planned for you! Don't miss it!

The JGSTB 2008 Guide to Immigration Research:
"Finding Your Grandma’s Immigration Record"

A 2-Part Jewish Genealogy Seminar to be given by
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay
Part 1: February 10, 2008
Part 2: March 9, 2008

The Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay will offer a two part educational seminar entitled: “The JGSTB 2008 Guide to Immigration Research: Finding Your Grandma’s Immigration Record” on February 10, 2008 (Part 1) and March 9, 2008 (Part 2) at 2:00 PM at Gulf Coast Jewish Family Services, 14041 Icot Blvd., Clearwater, Florida. Registration will be at 1:30 PM. This seminar will enable you to discover your family’s immigration records. The presentations will concentrate on both traditional and recently available Internet resources that will be of interest to the beginning genealogist as well as those with more experience. The past few years have seen substantial changes in the methods and sources of genealogical research, so the course will place special emphasis on recently developed Internet resources, which are invaluable to researchers of any level of experience. The course will focus on the proper techniques, methods, and short cuts (emphasizing local in addition to Internet resources) that will connect you with your ancestors in the old country – including your grandma!

Dr. Emil H. Isaacson will lead the seminar. Dr. Isaacson has 25 years experience in genealogy and has researched his ancestral roots back seven generations to the late 1700’s in Europe. He will share his successful and sometimes unsuccessful techniques.

The course is free to current paid up members of the Tampa Bay Jewish Genealogical Society. A one year family membership will be included in the $25 course fee for non-members. A $10.00 fee will be charged per book to defray the cost of printing. An annual membership in the Jewish Genealogical Society of Tampa Bay is $25 per individual or family.

Anyone interested in learning how to do Jewish genealogy research is invited to attend. Early registration is recommended so that sufficient copies of the printed book and handouts will be on hand.

For further information on the organization, to register for the class, or for directions to the meeting call Sally Israel at 727-343-1652.

FGS Membership Dues are Due!

Membership dues for 2008 are due as of January 1, 2008. This year, it is especially important to get your dues in as soon as possible. Early in 2008, we expect to produce a printed membership directory commemorating our society’s 50th anniversary. The directory will include member names, their chosen contact information, and surnames/areas that they are researching. In order to guarantee your inclusion in the directory, new memberships and renewals must be received by FGS no later than the meeting of February 16. You can mail your membership form and dues to our mailing address (you’ll find the link to the membership form in the menu on the right-hand side of the FGS website screen at http://fgstampa.org), or you can bring your check to either the January or February meetings, where we will have extra membership forms for you to fill out. If you have been thinking about joining FGS in the past, this is definitely the year to do it!

We have lots of activities planned for this, FGS’s Gala Fiftieth Anniversary Year. (There are plenty of volunteer opportunities too!) You don’t want to miss any of the excitement! Please get your membership dues and form in as soon as possible!
